GSWSS-III milestone: Pumped water reaches treatment plant

Shillong, April 9: In a major milestone towards completion of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS)-III, water pumped from the dam has reached the treatment plant.

“The pumping from phase-III, from the dam site is already completed. It has been successfully tested recently and water has reached the treatment plant,” Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Marcuise N Marak told reporters on Thursday.

On the pending work of distribution lines for GSWSS-III, the minster expressed optimism that the project would be completed soon, citing good response from localities.

“Some of the localities are still pending, but we are hoping to complete it,” Marak said, declining to provide updated figures on the revised expenditure incurred for GSWSS-III, stating he didn’t have the information with him.

‘New Shillong Water Supply Scheme next year’

The minister, meanwhile, said construction of the dam for New Shillong Water Supply Scheme will be completed by next year.

“The work is going on 24×7 and we are hoping to complete this dam by next year,” he said.

He added that other components of the project are also moving forward swiftly.

Referring to land acquisition issues that had earlier delayed the project, he said the issues have now been resolved, allowing work to proceed in full swing.

On Tura Water Supply Scheme, Marak said objections over the dam construction site had been resolved, paving the way for work to start soon.

“There were certain issues about where the dam was to be constructed… Now it is resolved, and work will be starting very soon,” he said.
