Former Phulbari MLA Esmatur Mominin Surrenders in Ri-Bhoi After Garo Hills Unrest Case

Tura, April 13: Former Phulbari MLA Esmatur Mominin, against whom a police FIR was filed in connection with the recent unrest in Garo Hills, has surrendered before police in Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi district.

He had been absconding since March following incidents of violence, with charges linked to alleged incitement.

On March 9, Mominin visited the DC Office in Tura to file his nomination papers for the GHADC polls. His presence triggered a law-and-order situation after protest groups gathered at the site and reportedly assaulted him.

Later the same day, after receiving medical attention, he allegedly delivered an inflammatory speech at Chibinang town in Phulbari. The speech is said to have triggered mob violence and clashes between groups, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.

Following these developments, the law-and-order situation in Garo Hills deteriorated significantly, leading to the cancellation of the elections.

Further details are awaited.
