New pay for teachers from May: Rymbui

Shillong, April 22: Over 23,000 teachers in the state will get their salary as per the new pay structure from May this year, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said on Wednesday.

“The new pay structure has already been implemented from April 1. We only need to release the salary on May 1 or first week of the month as the case may be,” Rymbui told reporters.

Calling it a long-pending issue, he said, “The challenge is there… that is why successive governments could not do it. I am happy that under the leadership of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma, this issue could be resolved.”

Stating that the government initiative is about more than the teacher’s salary, he said, “It is not a question of only implementing the new pay structure, it is a question of giving them the surety, giving them dignity and the government recognises your hard work.”

On parity with government employees, Rymbui said, “Yes, we cannot do or pay as what is being paid to the government employees, but we are trying our best and with the cooperation of everybody slowly and steadily we will be able to reform as much as possible.”

He added that the rationalization of schools was underway.

“As of now, rationalization of schools is going on. I am very positive. And moreover, this will not happen without the cooperation of the stakeholders,” he said.

“As the chief minister has said that education is a priority, (we will ensure that) we are able to reform or solve one by one most of these legacy issues.”

On the verification process, the minister said, “The data is not with me but DSEO and SDSEO are doing at the district and sub-divisional level.”

He reiterated, “We will release only the salary which, as I said, the new pay structure is already implemented from April 1, as committed by the state government on December 19, 2025.”
