‘Divya Bharat’ report brands state as year-round travel destination

Guwahati, May 3: Meghalaya is one of the very few year-round travel destinations in the country with no clear off-season, according to a NITI Aayog report on tourism.

The report “Divya Bharat: A Window to the Soul of India” presents a comprehensive tourism framework designed to encourage both domestic and international travellers to explore India’s diverse landscapes across seasons.

Dubbed a year-round travel companion, it aligns destinations with different months, offering a structured way to experience the country’s varied geography, culture and heritage.

The anthology brings together iconic landmarks, cultural traditions, festivals, cuisines and lesser-known destinations from across states and Union Territories.

It also aims to promote balanced tourism by encouraging travel beyond peak seasons, thereby supporting local economies and preserving cultural heritage.

Within this framework, Meghalaya stands out for its ability to attract visitors throughout the year. Key destinations such as Shillong, Cherrapunjee (Sohra) and Dawki feature prominently in the report’s month-wise travel calendar.

Unlike many states that experience sharp seasonal peaks, Meghalaya’s appeal evolves with the seasons. Winter offers clear skies and views of the Dawki river, while spring and early summer provide favourable conditions to explore waterfalls and caves. The post-monsoon period, meanwhile, is highlighted for its lush landscapes and replenished water systems.

The report also underlines Meghalaya’s distinctive tourism assets, including its living root bridges, extensive cave systems and strong indigenous cultural traditions, which continue to attract travellers seeking immersive, offbeat experiences.

Prepared as a national tourism compendium, Divya Bharat combines a month-wise travel guide with detailed state profiles to encourage more distributed and sustainable tourism.

For Meghalaya, the findings reinforce a clear shift: the state is no longer viewed as a seasonal destination, but as one that offers unique experiences across all months of the year.
