External reference books not necessary: Meghashree Roy

Shillong, May 4: HSSLC 2026 Arts stream topper Meghashree Roy of St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong said external reference books were not necessary to excel in the exam.

“You don’t need an external source or other books. It is just that you need to study the books provided by the schools,” she said after declaration of the results by Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) on Monday.

She scored 457 marks to secure the top rank.

Asked about the difficulty level, she added, “I think I prepared quite well. It was pretty easy for me, though some of the questions were difficult in some subjects. But overall it was easy exams. If you study well, you can score.”

On her first reaction after knowing the results, she said, “I am very shocked as well as happy because I never expected myself to get first position but I am happy.”

She plans to pursue Political Science after clearing the CUET.

“I plan to crack CUET and go to the university and study Political Science and ultimately pursuing civil service exams,” she said.

Explaining about her dreams, she said, “I want to become a civil service officer. I watched the UPSC interviews and I prepare UPSC general knowledge quiz because it will be important for me for the CUET preparation.”

Principal of St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Sonai Chacko, said the results reflected the institution’s values.

“The success is the product of consistency, hard work, discipline and strong commitment of our teachers and students,” Chacko said.

“While we take pride in the outstanding position secured, we celebrate not only ranks but also success of every individual according to their own caliber and potential. Each student’s journey is unique and every sincere effort deserves recognition,” she added.

“This result truly reflects our vision of nurturing not just achievers but confident and value oriented individuals. We thank God for his abundant blessings and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our students who have made us proud,” the Principal said.

Addressing current students, Chacko said, “Let this achievement inspire you. Success is not only about reaching the top but about striving to become the best of yourself. Stay focused, work consistently and believe in your ability. Challenges will come but they are only opportunity to become stronger. Remember true success lies not only in marks but in developing integrity, compassion and responsibility. Continue to aim high and give your best in all that you do.”
