Heavy vehicles restricted as Betasing bridge sustains damage

Ampati, May 15: The District Administration of South West Garo Hills has prohibited the movement of heavy vehicles over Bridge No. 15/3 at Betasing on the Garobadha-Dalu Road following reports of structural damage to the bridge approach.

The prohibitory order was issued by the District Magistrate, Anendya Raajsshre, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in view of public safety concerns.

According to official sources, the Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads), Ampati Division, reported that the bridge approach developed serious deterioration on May 14, posing risks to vehicular movement and human safety. Authorities feared that continued movement of heavy vehicles could further weaken the structure and possibly lead to collapse.

With immediate effect, all heavy vehicles, including loaded trucks, buses, tankers, tippers, dumpers and other overloaded commercial vehicles, have been barred from crossing the bridge until repair and restoration works are completed.

The administration has notified an alternate route for diverted vehicles. Heavy vehicles have been directed to travel from Betasing to Ishaguri via the PMGSY Road, proceed to Mirjumla through the Garobadha-Mankachar Road, and then continue to Ampati via the Ampati-Mankachar Road.

The Superintendent of Police, District Transport Officer, and Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads), have been directed to enforce the order strictly and install necessary barricades and signages at key junctions.
Officials stated that violation of the order would attract legal action under relevant provisions of law. The order has come into force immediately and is being widely publicised across the district.
