Shillong, May 18: Describing the National Food Security Act as a “sustainable initiative aimed at achieving zero hunger,” Meghalaya State Food Commission Chairman DP Wahlang has said the Commission’s mandate is to ensure that “no person in the state dies of starvation or stays hungry.”
Wahlang was speaking at the ‘Regional Camp 2026’ held at Rongjeng in East Garo Hills District on May 15. The camp was organized by the Sub Division Office (Civil), Rongjeng Sub Division, in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Food Commission, with the objective of enhancing food security.
Addressing the gathering, Wahlang emphasized the “crucial role of the Meghalaya State Food Commission in overseeing the implementation of food security schemes across various departments.”
This, he said, includes the Food & Civil Supplies Department which administers the Public Distribution System (PDS), the Education Department which supervises the PM POSHAN scheme, and the Social Welfare Department responsible for Anganwadi Centres.
“The role of the State Food Commission is to ensure no one in the state experiences starvation or goes without food,” Wahlang remarked.
On grievance redressal, he encouraged beneficiaries to approach the Meghalaya State Food Commission if their issues related to food security schemes remain unresolved at different levels.
He assured that “the Commission is prepared to step in and ensure that no eligible beneficiary is left without food.”
The event was attended by Dr M Tyngkan, Member of the Commission; Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills District; Senior Officers; and IW Ingty, Member Secretary, who were present on the dais.
Officials from the Social Welfare Department delivered a presentation on ICDS, while the Education Department spoke on PM POSHAN.
Dina Sangma, ADC of East Garo Hills District, discussed the Public Distribution System. Other officials also spoke on the Food Security Act as a sustainable initiative for achieving zero hunger.
The Regional Camp 2026 was held under the theme “National Food Security Act, 2013.”
