HSPDP lauds CM Sangma for 1st phase of border settlement with Assam

Shillong, Aug14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is likely to meet his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma before the Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly for the resumption of the second phase of border settlement between the two neighbouring states.

This was stated by Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) president KP Pangniang after aa meeting with the Chief Minister here on Wednesday.

Pangniang said the Chief Minister has assured the delegation to take up with the Assam counterpart for immediately resuming the second phase of border talks.

Sangma also informed the delegation that the regional committees have already been constituted by both the state governments and the deputy commissioner of West Khasi Hills had convened a meeting of the regional committee and is ready with the documentation to be submitted to Assam counterpart during the upcoming meeting.

The regional committee for West Khasi Hills headed by cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh had maintained that Meghalaya’s claim over 54 villages under the Langpih sector is very strong.

During the meeting with the Chief Minister, the HSPDP urged the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to resume the second phase of border talks with the Assam counterpart to resolve the six remaining areas of difference between the two states.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, HSPDP president KP Pangniang said, “…the party expresses its gratitude for the bold decision taken by the MDA government under your leadership that six sectors of the century-long unsettle dispute of interstate boundary have been materialized in 2022 and the remaining second phase of the six sectors which is still pending.”

“Nevertheless, the HSPDP urges the government to resume the settlement of the second phase with its Assam counterpart with immediate effect. The party is of utmost gratitude to the MDA government for tackling this unfinished task of the long-standing dispute of the interstate boundary,” he added.
