Two militants arrested in Manipur

Imphal, Jul 17: Security forces arrested two militants belonging to proscribed outfits in Manipur’s Bishnupur and Thoubal districts, police said on Friday.

A 25-year-old cadre of the banned Manipur People’s Defence Force was apprehended from the Loktak Project area in Bishnupur on Thursday, a police statement said.

The militant is a resident of Khangabok Leipat Leikai area.

“One pistol with a magazine loaded with five rounds, and a sum of Rs 1,00,000 were recovered from his possession,” the police said.

A 24-year-old member of the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was arrested from Wangjing Bazar in Thoubal district, the statement said.

Security forces continue to conduct search operations and area domination exercises in the fringe and vulnerable localities across all districts of Manipur since ethnic violence broke out three years ago.

More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic strife between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. (PTI)
