GUWAHATI, July 24: Long before the Northeast became India’s sporting powerhouse, Ngangom Kunjarani Devi had already paved the way.
The legendary Manipuri weightlifter, one of India’s most decorated Commonwealth Games athletes, inspired a generation of sportspersons to dream beyond the region’s boundaries. Today, as athletes from the Northeast continue to shine at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Championships, Kunjarani says their success is rooted in determination, discipline and an unwavering commitment to the country.
Speaking exclusively to The Meghalayan Express, the Commonwealth Games icon said the rise of Northeast athletes fills her with immense pride.
“I feel very proud that they are making history. Northeast women athletes are very strong, dedicated and devoted to the country. They are very hardworking. By birth they are very focused, and that is why our athletes are shining at the Olympics and other international competitions,” she said.
Kunjarani, regarded as the pioneer of weightlifting in the Northeast, said it is gratifying to see the region consistently producing champions across disciplines.
“Since my time, athletes have proved their talent. I am happy and proud to be the pioneer in weightlifting in the Northeast,” she said.
She also pointed to the growing recognition the region has received for its sporting excellence.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already declared Manipur as the powerhouse of sports,” she noted, adding that the achievements of athletes over the years have justified that recognition.
As India gears up for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Kunjarani has special words of encouragement for Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain, two of the country’s biggest sporting icons from the Northeast.
“I feel very proud. My blessings are with both Mirabai and Lovlina, and I am sure they will bring medals for the country,” she said.
Their presence at the forefront of India’s Commonwealth Games campaign reflects the growing influence of Northeast athletes, who have become central to India’s success on the international stage.
Significantly, Manipur alone has contributed 10 athletes to India’s contingent for Glasgow. The achievement comes despite the prolonged political and social unrest in the state over the past few years.
For Kunjarani, their selection is a lesson in resilience.
“Difficulties will always be there. Challenges will always be there. But how you overcome them is important,” she said.
Calling the Manipur contingent an inspiration for young sportspersons, she added, “This is a great example for young people in sports to let go of these things and move forward to achieve their dreams. Keep motivating yourself when there is no one.”
For the woman who opened the doors for generations of Northeast athletes, the region’s continued rise is more than a personal milestone—it is proof that talent, perseverance and self-belief can overcome even the toughest circumstances.
And as India looks towards Glasgow with high expectations, Kunjarani is convinced that the Northeast will once again play a leading role in the country’s medal quest.
