Shillong, Aug 14: The Union Home Ministry is “very positive” about the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) (MRSSA) Bill and it would be examined further, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday.
Officials from the state government have already held several rounds of meetings with the Home Secretary on the detailed provisions of the MRSSA.
“We had a very detailed meeting with the Home Secretary. The Chief Secretary as well as the Commissioner and Secretary of Home, Police and Political have had several rounds of meetings at different levels with the Home Secretary on all the detailed aspects of the MRSSA,” he said.
He noted that because the Bill deals with technical matters, extensive consultations are needed at the official level.
“We have been moving in the positive direction and in the right direction. As you are aware, these are matters of detail and therefore it requires a lot of consultation and a lot of discussion at the official level,” Sangma said.
According to the CM, the last meeting with the Home Secretary showed that the MHA is receptive to the state’s position.
“We could understand that the Home Ministry is very positive about it. In our discussion, a lot of positive points came out,” he said.
Sangma added that the Chief Secretary and Commissioner and Secretary Political will meet MHA officials again shortly, and expressed hope of moving forward.
“We are very hopeful that we will be able to take it forward in the right direction,” he said, adding that he and the Deputy Chief Minister also had a long discussion with the Home Secretary.
“Till things don’t happen, it will not be correct for me to disclose all the aspects and what the issues are. But I can only tell you that the discussions were very positive,” Sangma said.
