Shillong, Aug 14: The state government is holding discussions with various stakeholders on the Shree Cement project in East Jaintia Hills and would take a call after hearing all sides, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday.
Admitting apprehensions over the project, the Chief Minister pointed out that many locals in the project area have welcomed the industry.
“We are engaging with different organizations and looking at all aspects. As you are aware, the other side of the story is that there are a lot of local people in that particular area who are involved, and they are very happy and have supported the industry coming in,” he said.
“We have to take all stakeholders into confidence. We have to ensure that we speak to everybody. The engagement is on, and after discussion and engagement, we will see how to proceed.”
The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has, meanwhile, issued a 15-day ultimatum to cancel a public hearing on the plant.
On the road allegedly dug up during the public hearing, the Chief Minister said the Deputy Commissioner has ordered a probe and the government is awaiting the report.
“An enquiry has already been ordered. The Deputy Commissioner has already initiated an enquiry into what happened. So we are waiting for the reports,” Sangma said.
He also said the government remains open to talks with groups opposing the project.
“We have never closed our doors for any discussions… If there are any concerns, any misconceptions, or any areas of confusion, we will be happy to discuss and clarify so that we can all move together in a positive direction,” he added.
