Sanctioned late, stadium unlikely to be ready before Games: Shylla
Shillong, Aug 19: The largest football stadium at Mawkhanu will not be a competition venue for the National Games due to a late sanction, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said on Tuesday.
The project has a 36-month completion period and work began only recently, the minister said.
“We had not planned this venue for the National Games because it was sanctioned very late. The completion time is 36 months,” Shylla said.
Despite this, he said the government is hopeful of using the stadium for the opening ceremony given the pace of work.
“The progress is very good and the speed is very fast. With this pace we might be able to hold the opening ceremony there,” he said.
Shylla clarified the stadium will not be fully complete by then, but the structure and ground could be used.
“It won’t be fully completed, but we can use the inside of the ground. Otherwise it was not part of the National Games plan,” he added.
The minister, who recently visited the site with the Chief Minister, said construction has advanced rapidly since the foundation stage.
“I won’t give a percentage, but I am quite sure the progress is much faster than expected,” Shylla said.
