Ampati, Aug 21: An incident of elephant depredation was reported at Dakupara in South West Garo Hills district during the early hours of Friday, causing significant damage to two residential structures, though no loss of human life was reported.
According to officials, the incident occurred at around 3:00 AM when a wild elephant damaged the kitchen of Smt. Remol Hajong, wife of Nepalgre Hajong. The structure was severely damaged in the attack. The family, comprising two adults, was unharmed.
In a separate incident in the same locality, a dwelling-cum-store house belonging to Smt. Sonutibala Hajong, wife of Gopal Hajong, was also severely damaged by the marauding elephant.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has initiated an assessment of the losses and is taking necessary steps to provide relief assistance to the affected families as per applicable norms and provisions.
Meanwhile, the district administration has advised residents in elephant-prone and other vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and to promptly report any elephant movement or related incidents to the concerned authorities to help prevent further loss or damage.
