Chennai, Aug 23: Fifth seed Om Patel and top seed Deepshika Vinayagamurthy emerged champions in the boys’ and girls’ singles at the UNIFI–ITF Junior Tennis Cup here on Sunday.
Deepshika produced a composed performance to defeat Savitha Bhuvaneswaran in straight sets, while fifth seed Patel battled for nearly two hours to overcome Om Verma 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in a thriller.
Patel and Verma produced an intense and high-quality contest, showcasing a wide range of skills including drop shots, lobs, volleys, smashes, powerful serves and strong forehands.
Patel made a positive start, but Verma settled into the contest and won six games in a row to take the opening set 6-1. Patel responded strongly in the second set, securing a crucial break in the eighth game before closing it out 6-3.
The fifth seed carried the momentum into the decider, breaking Verma twice in the fourth and sixth games to seal the match.
In the girls’ singles final, top seed Deepshika overcame Savitha 6-4, 6-3 to add another title to her impressive run following her Junior National Championship victory last week.
Both players held serve until 4-4 in the opening set. Deepshika then broke Savitha in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead before serving out the set 6-4.
Deepshika raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set, but Savitha fought back by breaking in the seventh game. Deepshika, however, regained her composure and finished strongly to win the second set 6-3 and claim the title. (PTI)
