Shillong, Aug 28: A grant even is being planned by the state government to formally receive the President’s Police Colour Award for Meghalaya Police.
Meghalaya is the fourth state in the Northeast and 18th in the country to get the award since it was instituted in 1952, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong told the Assembly on Friday while justifying the proposed spending of Rs 3 crore for the event.
The amount earmarked is is to mark a historic moment for Meghalaya Police, Tynsong said in reply to VPP MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang’s question about the proposed spending for a one-day programme.
“We are so proud and so fortunate that the President of India has chosen Meghalaya Police as one of the best police forces. In 50-plus years of history, this is the only time we are getting it. It is a matter of pride,” Tynsong said.
He said the award itself proves the force is among the best in the country and the House should congratulate the police.
On the expenditure, he said details were not available at the moment, but the function will be a grand one likely to be held in late September or October.
He said the government has received indication that either the President, Prime Minister or Home Minister will attend the ceremony.
“I request all of us to attend the grand function to be organised by the state government to ensure this historical moment is celebrated,” Tynsong said.
Marbaniang had said the police deserve recognition but the government should provide details of the Rs 3 crore proposed spending.
