Steady progress in Games infra work: Shylla

Shillong, Aug 29: Infrastructure development and other necessary facilities for the National Games 2027 are progressing steadily to ensure timely completion, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said on Saturday.

Addressing the celebration National Sports Day marking the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, Shylla highlighted the vital role of sports in promoting fitness, discipline, and healthy living among the state’s youth.

Explaining the government’s broader vision that extends beyond the National Games, he said, “Our objective is not limited to successfully hosting the National Games in 2027. We want to use this opportunity to create a lasting sporting legacy for Meghalaya by developing infrastructure, identifying grassroots talent, and providing athletes with proper training and exposure.”

The goal, he emphasised, is to ensure that the infrastructure currently being built continues to benefit athletes and youth long after the Games have concluded.

He said the government has already initiated several programs to cultivate an environment where sports can be pursued as a viable and serious career option.

“Meghalaya has tremendous sporting talent. With the right infrastructure, training, and support, I believe our athletes can perform exceptionally well at national and international competitions,” Shylla said.

Urging the youth to actively participate in sports, the Minister said, “Sports teach us discipline, teamwork, and perseverance… Let us work together to develop a stronger sporting culture and make Meghalaya one of the leading sporting states in the country.”
