Shullai unaware of UDP MLAs joining BJP

Shillong, Sept 2: Senior BJP leader Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday said he had no knowledge of nine UDP MLAs joining the party, claiming that he learnt about it only from the media.

Reacting to speculation over UDP leaders meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Shullai said, “I only saw it in newspapers and media. In reality, I have no information at all about this.”

On whether the legislators would be welcomed, Shullai said, “If these UDP MLAs, MDCs, MLAs from other parties or individuals or social workers join, it will be a matter of great happiness because we are those who welcome everyone.”

He said strengthening the organisation remains the central leadership’s key directive and the party is open to leaders from other parties, NGOs and individuals joining.

Shullai said the party’s growing acceptance is visible on the ground.

“When I go to many places, to programmes, when I interact with them, they have started accepting the BJP. We have worked hard because the public has started accepting the party,” he said.

He cited organisational expansion in Mawlai, traditionally not seen as a BJP stronghold, where the party formed a new mandal a few months ago.

“The public did not expect that people in Mawlai have started accepting the BJP, but we have formed the mandal,” he said.

He said party office-bearers, who met recently at the Secretariat along with BJP spokesperson M Kharkrang, reported that people were enrolling daily in the party.
