Shillong, Sept 3: Another member of the Khasi Students’ Union has been arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the August-19 violence during KSU’s black flag bike rally in Shillong.
Samuel Kharbani of the KSU Nongmensong unit was arrested on Thursday after his involvement in the incident was ascertained, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told reporters on Thursday.
Two KSU members from Nongmensong were summoned to Mawdiangdiang police station in connection with a CBI case.
While their statements were being recorded, the SIT examined their role in the August-19 violence, Syiem said.
“After ascertaining facts during investigation, Samuel Kharbani has been arrested. Celestine Lyngdoh’s involvement was not found, so he was released,” the SP said.
He said sections under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita for unlawful assembly and other offences have been invoked.
Four KSU leaders were earlier arrested after the rally turned violent, leaving two vehicles burnt, 31 vehicles vandalised and 18 persons assaulted.
