Ri Bhoi College pays tribute to founder D D Lapang

Nongpoh, Sept 9: Ri Bhoi College on Wednesday observed its 42nd anniversary, while also commemorating the first death anniversary of its founder and former governing body president, D D Lapang.

The programme began with the hoisting of the college flag by Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem in the presence of college authorities and members of the administration.

The commemorative programme was held at the college Conference Hall and was attended by R.R. Makdoh, one of the founding members of the institution; Prof. S.N. Lamare, Head of the Department of History, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU); W.K. Blah, secretary of the governing body; Baluk Blah, son of the late Dr Lapang; and other distinguished guests.

Teachers, professors and students also took part in the programme through cultural performances, including songs and dances.

Paying tribute to Dr Lapang, R.R. Makdoh, Prof. S.N. Lamare and Meaidibahun Blah recalled his role in establishing Ri Bhoi College and his wider contribution to public life and education in Meghalaya.

Dr Lapang was described as a prominent leader whose public career included serving as Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Cabinet Minister and Nongpoh MLA. He represented Nongpoh for eight consecutive terms.

Speakers also highlighted his role in the creation of Ri Bhoi as a full-fledged district in 1992, as well as his contribution to the establishment of Northern Ri Bhoi College and Alpha English Higher Secondary School.

The programme concluded with a tribute to Dr D.D. Lapang, remembering his contributions to education, public service and the development of Ri Bhoi and Meghalaya. Dr Lapang passed away on September 12, 2025.
