Shillong, Sept 21: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has alleged an attempt to bribe it to free three suspected Bangladesh nationals apprehended by JSU activists in Jowai on Sunday.
The suspected illegal migrants were travelling in a tourist taxi (ML 04 E 3485) which was intercepted by JSU activists at Lad Demthring.
The trio “confessed” to being Bangladeshi nationals during a “verification” of documents, according to JSU Jowai Circle. They were later handed over to Jowai police station.
Meanwhile, the JSU alleged that brokers offered lakhs of rupees to release the suspected Bangladeshi nationals.
“We were offered bribes amounting to lakhs of rupees to secure the release of the perpetrators. We categorically rejected it and went ahead with the FIR,” JSU education secretary Bocheru Mi Pohsnem said.
Demanding strong action against perpetrators of illegal immigration, the JSU said, “We demand a comprehensive and immediate police investigation to ensure this cross-border network is completely dismantled.”
