Shillong, Sept 23: Authorities of Meghalaya and Assam have reiterated their commitment to addressing local issues through dialogue and mutual cooperation as local community representatives from both sides agreed to cooperate with authorities in addressing local concerns.
The decision was taken in a joint inter-district coordination meeting between Ri-Bhoi and Kamrup Metropolitan district administration – in the wake of differences in Maikhuli and adjoining border areas – held at Dispur, Guwahati on Tuesday.
The meeting, convened to decide on a mechanism aimed at enabling prompt intervention in the event of local disputes or misunderstandings in the border areas, was attended by senior administrative and police officials and representatives of local communities from both sides.
According to official sources, the meeting focused on maintaining law and order through proactive communication, closer coordination between officials on the ground and joint vigilance to prevent misunderstandings and ensure that anti-social elements do not disrupt peace and harmony among border communities.
Village heads, elders and community representatives from both sides also participated in the discussions and raised issues concerning the area.
They expressed their willingness to work closely with the respective district administrations and police authorities to address local concerns and maintain peace.
Both sides also agreed to strengthen regular communication between administrative and police officials stationed along the border, especially in Maikhuli region.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continued dialogue, stronger coordination and collective efforts to maintain long-term peace and stability along the Meghalaya-Assam inter-state boundary.
