Shillong, Sept 24: In a fillip to the technological advancements in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated Shillong Tech Park-II at New Shillong Township.
The Rs 121-crore project is the biggest single addition of dedicated IT space in the state so far.
Of the 1.8 lakh sq ft of space on offer at the Park, some of it had already been booked by top-notch names of the industry.
Agreements were signed with StaffFlex LLP, a Shillong-headquartered business process management company catering to clients in the UK; Shamrock AI, a multinational operating from Phase-I and now expanding into Phase-II; and US-headquartered multinational Alorica, which will occupy two floors — the largest single commitment in the new building.
The Park will also house an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence, supported as part of the IndiaAI Mission of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Sangma said Phase-II was already almost fully booked before its inauguration, making it clear that demand for Grade-A technology space in Shillong was exceeding supply. “You need more,” he said.
Local companies have also played a role in the park’s development, the Chief Minister noted.
With companies such as StaffFlex and Shamrock AI operating alongside multinationals, he said, the Park is not just a destination for companies coming from outside the state, but also a home base for companies born in Meghalaya that can take their expertise to international markets.
For Sangma, this was also the realisation of an idea first conceived in 2008.
“The first time I had a dream of an IT park, tech park or innovation hub in Shillong was in 2008,” he said, recalling his vision of creating an IT and innovation space and ecosystem.
“Today just feels like a dream come true,” he said.
The Tech Park, according to the government, is not meant to be just an office complex. The aim is to build an ecosystem around technology companies.
Sangma also pointed to planned infrastructure around New Shillong Township — the new Secretariat, better connectivity and the expansion of the city’s hospitality sector.
