Shillong, Sept 24: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations on Thursday critisised the Finance Ministry’s order to keep public and regional rural banks open on Sunday, ahead of the two-day nationwide bank strike from September 28.
General secretary Balkarin Ch Marak said the order ignores Meghalaya’s predominantly Christian character, where Sunday is observed for worship and family life, pointing out that the decision was taken without state-specific consultation.
CoMSO maintained that it is not against uninterrupted banking services, however alternatives such as extended hours before and after the strike, stronger ATM and digital services, or limited emergency arrangements should have been explored instead.
The organisation has urged the Finance Ministry, RBI, banks and the state government to reconsider and to ensure future decisions affecting the state’s social and religious practices are taken after due consultation.
If concerns are not addressed, CoMSO will be compelled to act, Marak warned.
