Shillong, Sept 25: Deficit teachers in Meghalaya have issued an ultimatum to the state government to address their six pending demands by October 9 and threatened to launch an intensified agitation across the state after the “deadline”.
The deficit teachers under the banner of Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) and Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers and Employees Association (GHDSTEA) staged a protest march from MBoSE office to Malki Ground on Friday before issuing the ultimatum.
“If all legitimate demands are not fulfilled by October 9, we shall be left with no alternative but to launch aggressive statewide protests. Any disruption to academic schedules or student activities shall rest entirely on the inaction and apathy of the government,” KJDSTA president Boswell Pala said on Friday.
The two organisations also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in this regard.
“…(We have written to the CM) to serve this final ultimatum. Nearly a month has elapsed since we formally sought an appointment with your esteemed office, yet our request has met with silence and perhaps indifference, yet again,” the memorandum stated.
“For years, the deficit school community who form the backbone of Meghalaya’s school education has endured severe financial strain, bureaucratic apathy, and systemic indifference,” Pala said.
On DA dues, he said teachers are still paid 49% DA though 51% was due from July 1, 2025 and 53% from January 1, 2026, besides 43% arrears for January and February 2024.
On CPF, Pala said, “As per order dated November 21, 2024, the matching contribution was raised to 10% from January 1, 2025. To date, staff are still receiving only 8%. We demand immediate implementation with arrears.”
The associations also demanded immediate clearance of pending recruitment for retired posts, a halt to conversion of deficit posts into SPF temporary posts, exemption from the Centralised Provident Fund Scheme 2026, restoration of the Board of Trustees under the 1969 Act, and a binding deadline for CPF and NPS fund transfer.
