Tynsong seeks VPP’s answer on KHADC’s development work
Shillong, Sept 28: The National People’s Party (NPP has questioned the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) as to what changes it had brought in the KHADC after winning elections on “false propaganda” run on social media.
Pointing at social media, NPP state president and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the NPP has now understood why it had lost two elections in 2024 (Lok Sabha polls) and 2025 (ADC elections).
“I just want to remind you about 2024-25, perhaps I understand here that perhaps those two elections that we lost, perhaps they were elections that were run on social media,” Tynsong said while campaigning for NPP’s Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll candidate Dr DRL Nonglait at Wahlyngkhat village under Pynursla Block.
Tynsong wondered as to what extent social media can work to mislead the public with false propaganda and that “people believe it”.
“I have come to understand that perhaps this social media has misled the people of Meghalaya state and especially us, the people of the Hynniewtrep land,” he said.
He alleged that the VPP had won the elections by circulating false, deceitful, and baseless information on social media.
Taking a dig at VPP, which is ruling the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Tynsong sought an answer from the party on the development works done by KHADC during its tenure.
“The public has given you the mandate to govern in the district council. What is the change? Please give an answer,” he said.
“I don’t want to explain more about this, you know better,” he added.
The NPP president also launched a scathing attack on the VPP over its attempt to amend the Land Act, which was recently returned by the Governor.
“…the law says it will no longer recognise the Rangbah Shnong, the Dorbar Shnong, the Dorbar Raid, Dorbar Hima, as if they are no longer needed, everything has to be done there in the district council,” Tynsong said.
Asserting that he has studied the bill in detail, he said, “I have read every single line of what they have done in that amendment to change which affects the tradition and custom and especially the powers of the Dorbar Shnong.”
“You the public should judge,” Tynsong told the gathering.
Rumour about 22 MLAs camping in Delhi
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister refuted allegations that 22 NPP MLAs were in New Delhi to meet the BJP central leadership recently.
He said he was surprised to see rumours being circulated that he was aspiring to become the Chief Minister.
“I went to Delhi on the 23rd with Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang and the Chief Minister came on 24th September. We had a meeting with seniors in Delhi. But news of all kinds was spread to the extent that everyone across the state lost their sleep,” Tynsong said.
Seeking to put a rest to speculations, Tynsong clarified there was no political move and the visit was related to official engagements in the national capital.
Pitching for Dr DRL Nonglait, Tynsong described him as an ideal candidate for the Shillong seat.
“Dr DRL Nonglait is a wise, humble, God-fearing, respectable and well-mannered gentleman. It will be very difficult to get such a person,” he said.
“I appeal to the public to give full support and ensure a respectable victory for Dr DRL Nonglait in the upcoming MP by-election,” he added.
