Additional forces sought for Durga Puja

Shillong, Oct 12: The police have geared up to ensure peaceful celebration of the upcoming Durga Puja with additional security deployment across Puja pandals in the city.

“We have asked for additional police deployment and adequate police deployment and security will be ensured in every place,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said on Monday.

The SP said the exact requirement of forces is being worked out.

“As of now, it has not been finalised how much force will be required. We are still working on it, we still have some time. Additional force is being asked and we will review the situation from time to time,” he added.

The SP said forces are being mobilised from across the state, besides the existing CRPF deployment.

On preparations, Syiem said sector officers have held meetings with all stakeholders for smooth conduct of the festivities.

He said advisories have been issued for installation of CCTVs and fire safety measures, with focus on preventing cases of missing children and accidents.

Puja committees have also been asked to deploy volunteers, who will be assisted by Shillong Traffic Police at major pandals and strategic points, he added.
