DDMA team reaches Sangnga Nehgu Lake, finds evidence of glacial lake outburst

There remains a significant risk of another GLOF from Sangnga Nehgu Lake, claims DDMA team

Tawang (Arunachal), Aug 23: A glacial lake outburst from Lake Sangnga Nehgu occurred on August 14, washing away five log bridges and severely damaging the Brokpa track at multiple locations.

This incident was reported by a team from the Tawang District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), which reached the Sangnga Nehgu Lake, located at an altitude of 16,000 feet near the glacier on the Mount Gorichen range, on Friday.

The DDMA that assessed the damage caused by the glacial lake outburst was led by Tawang Deputy Commissioner Kanki Darang and Superintendent of Police DW Thongon. Their visit was conducted under the instructions of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

During their assessment, the team observed that there is an ongoing risk of another Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) from Lake Sangnga Nehgu.

They noted that the glacier behind the lake is melting rapidly, which is causing the volume of water in the lake to increase.

The team began their journey from Jethang, located at an altitude of 13,200 feet, on August 20. They halted for the night at Merathang, which is at 14,600 feet. The following morning, they resumed their ascent and reached Lake Sangnga Nehgu, situated at 16,000 feet

The team comprised of Mogto EAC Honjon Perme, Jang WRD AE Kago Kani, Tawang DIPRO, trek leader and photography expert Jambey Dondu, representatives from the army, NIMAS and other support staff.
