Shillong, Oct 13: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma on Tuesday said certain observations were recently pointed out by IIT Guwahati professors who inspected the new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang, adding that corrections are already underway.
“Recently, the Guwahati IIT professors have come, they have inspected and they made certain observations which are very minor and the necessary corrections are already being made,” Sangma said.
He said a safety audit is being carried out simultaneously since the ceiling installation will cover the interior.
“It is being done simultaneously as the ceiling will be covered so we won’t have time to go inside to go for the safety audit,” the Speaker said.
On construction progress, he said both the right and left wings are complete while the main hall, dome and culturally-themed intricate ceiling are yet to be completed.
“It is progressing and it is on schedule but certain unforeseen things happened. We are hoping it will be completed within this calendar year. The collapse of the earlier dome was the main reason for delay as we had to wait for the new design to be approved by IITs,” he said.
Sangma asserted there has been no cost escalation so far and expressed hope that no untoward incident occurs. “Safety is very important,” he said.
He also added that proposals have been sent to the Central government and there has been positive response for the second phase.
