Tura, November 3: As the afternoon light softened over the hills of Tura, the faithful of the Garo Hills gathered once more among the graves of those they loved. For generations, All Souls’ Day has called Catholic families to the cemetery, not in grief alone, but in hope, prayer, and remembrance.
Across the region, believers arrived carrying flowers and candles. They laid blossoms upon the tombs of their departed and lit small flames in their memory, even as holy Mass was offered in Catholic cemeteries throughout the Garo Hills.
At the oldest Catholic cemetery in Tura, near the Bishop’s House, the Auxiliary Bishop of Tura, Rt Rev Jose Chirackal, led the faithful in prayer during the Eucharistic celebration on Monday afternoon. Families stood together beside the resting places of parents, grandparents, spouses, and children, joined in a single act of devotion.
Bishop Jose turned to the Gospel account of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, a passage that has comforted believers through the centuries. He reminded the gathering that those who believe in Christ shall not perish, but will have eternal life in His Kingdom of Heaven.
“We all need to pray for our souls and the souls of others,” the Bishop said. “This month of November is dedicated for the departed souls, so let us all pray for them, that they may have eternal peace and rest in the kingdom of Christ.”
As the Mass drew toward its close, the priests moved among the graves, blessing each with holy water, a gesture of reverence for the departed and a sign of the Church’s enduring prayer for them.
The observance begins well before the day itself. In the days leading up to All Souls’ Day, families visit the cemeteries to clean the graves, apply a fresh coat of paint, and adorn them with flowers. It is a labour of love, a way of honouring those who have gone before, and many say it brings the family closer together as they remember.
As evening fell, the cemeteries slowly transformed. Thousands of candles flickered to life across the graves, filling the darkness with a gentle golden glow that seemed to rise toward the night sky. In that quiet radiance, the faithful stood in prayer, a living reminder of the Christian hope that death is not the end, and that the light of Christ shines on for those who rest in Him.
