A new wave of aroma transforms Northeast India

Guwahati, Jan 27: Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, unveiled a bold vision for the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir at the North East Aroma Conclave 2025. Speaking virtually at the launch of the Incubation & Innovation Complex (IICON) of CSIR-NEIST, he spotlighted the transformative potential of the Aroma Mission, which has successfully bridged these biodiverse regions with India’s economic aspirations.

Dr. Singh highlighted how the Aroma Mission, originally a game-changer in J&K with its lavender cultivation, is now flourishing in the Northeast. “This is more than a scientific initiative—it’s a holistic model of convergence,” he said, referencing the integration of flagship schemes like StartUp India, MSME support, and agricultural innovation. By fostering entrepreneurship, empowering self-help groups, and promoting employment, the Aroma Mission has emerged as a platform for regional transformation.

The event saw 25 startups, NGOs, and self-help groups gain access to IICON’s state-of-the-art facilities, including 27 cutting-edge technologies. Entrepreneurs now have a two-year runway to develop production and marketing strategies, reducing risks and laying a solid foundation for growth. Dr Singh called IICON a “one-stop solution” for innovation, skill-building, and collaboration, signalling a new era for economic development in the region.

The Minister emphasized the Northeast’s potential as a hub for aromatic crops like citronella, lemongrass, and patchouli. Thanks to CSIR-NEIST’s efforts, over 5,000 hectares have been cultivated, benefiting 10,000 farmers. The addition of 39 essential oil distillation units and a plan to distribute one lakh agarwood saplings promises to position the region as a powerhouse in the global aromatic plant industry.

Dr. Singh underscored how the Aroma Mission addresses key government priorities like doubling farmers’ income and empowering women. He praised the Rural Women Technology Park, developed under the mission, as a replicable template for nationwide impact. “The Northeast is no longer a region of minimal connectivity. It’s now a hub of opportunity, boasting robust rail, air, and water networks that are opening doors for industrial partnerships and exports,” he remarked.

The Minister lauded the Bio-E3 policy and India’s biotechnology advancements, stressing that the Northeast is poised to play a crucial role in achieving the vision of India@2047. With the Aroma Mission driving sustainable innovation, entrepreneurship, and rural empowerment, the Northeast is emerging as a beacon of India’s growth story, turning its natural and human resources into catalysts for prosperity.
