A Sonam Raghuvanshi in Garo Hills: Wife and lover among four arrested for murder

Tura, June 25: Just when the sensational story about the chilling murder of Raja Raghuvanshi by his newly wed wife Sonam and her lover in the tourist region of Sohra was dying down, another similar story has now emerged in the Garo Hills where a man,  Pirot R Marak, was murdered by his wife’s lover and her brothers and passed off as suicide in the Tikrikilla region.

Lepson R Marak and Nennen R Marak

Was it a crime of passion, a family conspiracy, or something even darker? No one knows at this juncture, but police have arrested the victim’s wife, Nennen R Marak, her alleged lover Reknang K Sangma and her two brothers Sengba R Marak and Lepson R Marak after police and medical teams exhumed the body from behind their house in Renggigre village and conducted a post mortem following a public outcry from villagers who tipped off authorities about the murder.

Despite denials of any foul play by the family members, a medical team backed by police presence exhumed the body on the 12th of this month and conducted the post mortem.

The autopsy report revealed that the husband had been strangled to death and was brutally assaulted leading to severe trauma to his testicles.

Following the submission of the autopsy report, police teams swooped down on the village yesterday, June 24, and took into custody the wife of the deceased, her alleged lover from the same village and her two brothers. A court has sent them to three days police custody and police have begun interrogation.

Late Pirot R Marak’s clan- the Raksam Mahari, has been shocked by the murder.  His aunt Premi R. Marak, spoke to media persons expressing palpable grief and anger. “Pirot was murdered in his own home—not in Tura, not in Williamnagar, but right where he lived. His wife and her family either did this or know who did it. We demand justice for our son and our Mahari,” she demanded, and added that justice must be given in this case to ensure it sets a precedent so no one dares commit such a monstrous act again.
