Shillong, Dec 5: Shillong is set to transform its skyline with the much-anticipated Shillong Ropeway Project, officially launched by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
The foundation stone, originally laid by President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year, was unveiled at the breathtaking Shillong Peak viewpoint, marking the start of a new chapter in the state’s tourism landscape.
At the heart of this INR 175 crore initiative is a partnership with French company POMA, known globally for its ropeway expertise. The project promises more than just a scenic ride—it offers a fresh solution to Shillong’s notorious traffic congestion, while boosting tourism and local revenue.
POMA is an 83-year-old world leader in ropeway transportation, with subsidiaries on five continents. The company has developed its commercial activities in India since 1970’s and has built the Pelling ropeway in Sikkim.
“This project is the culmination of four years of effort and collaboration between the government, the community, and our dedicated partners,” said Sangma. The ropeway will traverse key localities, offering panoramic views while providing a modern, efficient transport alternative.
During the function, the chief minister and minister tourism handed over the letter of acceptance to the construction firm – KEC International Limited – Tantia Construction Limited JV, to official begin the construction of the prestigious project, which is estimated to INR 175 Crore. The chief minister also handed over the second instalment of INR 1.5 Crore to Glanding Lyngdoh, general secretary of Riat Laban Dorban Pyllum, which is part of the token amount of INR 3 Crore for land compensation.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister lauded the stakeholders for completing necessary paper works and official formalities for commencement of the project.
“There were numerous challenges from land acquisition, permission and also the creation of the Meghalaya Ropeway Development Authority for ensuring safety standards and licensing. The commencement of the project is fruition of four long years of preparation,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to Raid Laban Dorbar Shnong Pyllun for extending cooperation. The project will pass through Laban, Madan Laban, Upper Lumparing, Lower Lumparing, Lumkjatsngi, Oxford Hills and Rngi Shillong.
Talking about community partnership for the project, the chief minister said, “It is of great importance that the community partners with the government. The project is an outcome of partnership between all stakeholders. This project will ensure revenue collection, which will benefit the Dorbar and other stakeholders of the project,” the chief minister remarked.
The chief minister also lauded Armed forces particularly Air Force for extending all their cooperation and support for initiation of the project.
As construction gears up, the government is also planning alternate routes to ensure seamless connectivity and ease congestion, making this a landmark project not just for tourists but for everyday commuters.
Meghalaya’s first passenger ropeway is more than infrastructure—it’s a symbol of progress, innovation, and community partnership.
