CM recalls PA Sangma’s close connection with people of Mangsang

Shillong, March 5: Launching two key initiatives in health and sports sector of East Garo Hills, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday laid the foundation stones for a mini stadium and renovation of Mangsang Primary Health Centre (PHC).

Sanctioned at Rs 4.73 crore, the mini stadium will be built by upgrading an existing sports facility originally initiated by Conrad’s father and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma.

In his address, the Chief Minister recalled his long association with the region and his late father’s close connection with Mangsang.

“I have many fond memories of this field where we are sitting today. Late PA Sangma had a special affection for Mangsang and often spoke about this place and its people,” he said.

The chief minister noted that the foundation stone was being laid on the 10th death anniversary of PA Sangma, calling it a fitting tribute to the former Lok Sabha Speaker who had contributed to the development of the area.

Sangma also laid the foundation stone for renovation and expansion of Mangsang PHC, a project sanctioned at Rs 2.98 crore.

The upgrade will include renovation of the main health centre building, construction of staff quarters, an additional GNM quarter, and a yoga-cum-meeting hall to improve healthcare services in the area.

Emphasising the importance of grassroots healthcare, the chief minister said strengthening health infrastructure remains a priority for the state government.

Sangma also announced several development initiatives for the region. He said fire and emergency services for the area will be activated soon, while a proposal to create a new administrative block will be examined.

He further informed that the Mangsang–Adokgre road project will soon enter its second phase, while the Mangsang–Riangdo road, which could improve connectivity to Shillong and Guwahati, is currently under survey.

Encouraging young people to make use of government schemes, the chief minister urged them to explore opportunities in entrepreneurship and skill development while also stressing the importance of maintaining cleanliness in communities.

The programme was attended by Jim M Sangma, senior government officials and local residents.
