AASU protests against rising prices of essentials in Assam

Guwahati, Nov 20: The All Kamrup Metro District Students Union (AKMDSU), under the banner of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), staged a protest on Wednesday at Uzan Bazar, Guwahati, against the rising prices of essential commodities in the state.
The protest was part of a statewide agitation by AASU, with similar demonstrations held by district units across the state.

The protest began with a rally from Swahid Nyas to Ugratara Temple, where participants raised slogans such as “Supply Minister Hi Hi”, “Ranjeet Dass Hi Hi”, “Check the Price Hike”, “Ranjeet Dass go back”, and “Supply Minister Should Resign”.
AASU president Utpal Sarma criticized the state government for failing to control inflation.

“The price hike of essential commodities and fuel has caused significant hardships for common people. The supply minister has utterly failed to address this issue and should resign,” he said. Sarma also highlighted the plight of farmers, stating, “Farmers are not receiving fair prices for their produce, and the government’s promise of doubling their income remains unfulfilled.”

Sarma further commented on a public remark by the supply minister, suggesting he tender his resignation following his acknowledgement of criticism from his own family over the issue. The protest saw active participation from AKMDSU leaders, including president Bipuljyoti Malakar, general secretary Samiran Kalita, and AASU leaders like education secretary Tutumoni Kalita, state executive member Alakesh Nath, and others. Activists from regional student bodies also joined the demonstration, emphasizing the widespread discontent over the price hike.

The protestors vowed to continue their agitation until the government takes effective measures to curb inflation and ensure farmers receive fair compensation for their produce.
