Guwahati, April 29: In a major tribute to Bodofa Upendranath Brahma, a key figure in the Bodo rights movement, a stretch of Lala Lajpat Rai Marg in South Delhi will be renamed Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Marg. The road renaming and unveiling of Bodofa’s statue will take place on May 1 near Kailash Colony, marking the 35th death anniversary of the revered leader.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the event as the chief guest. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will attend as special guests, along with BTC Chief Pramod Boro, Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Assam Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, and ABSU president Dipen Boro.

The renamed road, an 835-metre, 50-foot-wide stretch near Kailash Colony Metro Station, runs alongside the Bodoland Guest House. A statue of Bodofa will also be installed at the Kailash Colony roundabout. The tribute is being organized by the Assam government in coordination with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Bodofa Upendranath Brahma, widely regarded as the Father of the Bodo People, was a visionary leader and social reformer who championed the rights, dignity, and identity of the Bodo community. His lifelong work for social justice and peaceful change has left a lasting legacy.

As part of the commemoration, the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) will light five lakh earthen lamps and candles on May 1 at 5:30 PM in households and public spaces across the Bodoland Territorial Region and Assam.

Speaking at a press conference, ABSU President Dipen Boro said, “Bodofa’s dream was an inclusive society where every person could live with dignity. The naming of a road and installation of his statue in the heart of the national capital is a proud and historic moment. My sincere thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his blessings, Home Minister Amit Shah for fulfilling this long standing demand, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his consistent support.”

Dipen Boro also noted that this recognition stems from a memorandum submitted by ABSU to Amit Shah at Parliament House on December 6, 2024, and Shah’s announcement during the ABSU’s 57th annual conference in Dotma, Kokrajhar on March 16.

The ceremony is expected to draw leaders, students, and citizens, all united in honouring the life, principles, and enduring influence of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma.
