Arunachal Pradesh sets its sights on becoming a premier global tourism hub

Guwahati, Nov 27:  In a landmark announcement at the 12th International Tourism Mart (ITM) held in Kaziranga, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu unveiled an ambitious vision to transform the state into a premier global tourism destination.

Khandu emphasized Arunachal’s rich tapestry of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and adventure opportunities, positioning it as the jewel of Northeast India’s tourism landscape.

Addressing a gathering of tourism stakeholders, Khandu hailed the ITM as a crucial platform for fostering unity and collaboration among Northeastern states. “This event strengthens our tourism ecosystem by connecting stakeholders, promoting partnerships, and showcasing the unique offerings of our region,” he remarked, adding that the collective effort will make Northeast India a cohesive and irresistible destination for global travelers.

Khandu revealed the state’s commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly tourism. The government plans to enhance infrastructure, improve connectivity, and develop iconic treks, trails, and festivals to attract both domestic and international travelers. By empowering local communities through homestays and skill development initiatives, Arunachal aims to balance tourism growth with cultural preservation and environmental conservation.

“Our vision extends beyond mere numbers. We want tourism to leave a lasting impact—boosting the economy, preserving our unique identity, and safeguarding our environment for future generations,” Khandu said.

Highlighting Arunachal Pradesh’s strategic location, Khandu noted the state’s extensive international borders—440 km with Myanmar, 1,080 km with Tibet, and 160 km with Bhutan—and its sparse population. In this context, he praised the Indian Army as a key partner in developing border tourism under the Vibrant Village Programme (VVP). “Together with the Army and paramilitary forces, we are transforming our border villages into hubs for sustainable tourism,” he stated.

For adventure enthusiasts, Arunachal offers unparalleled experiences—from trekking in untouched landscapes to rafting in untamed rivers. The upcoming 16th Annual Conference of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) in Tawang from December 3 to 8 is set to further cement the state’s reputation as a top adventure tourism destination.

Khandu extended a heartfelt invitation to adventure tour operators, investors, and influencers to explore Arunachal’s vast potential and collaborate in shaping innovative tourism ventures. He assured them of the government’s unwavering support for sustainable tourism initiatives.

The numbers speak for themselves: over the past decade, tourist footfall in Arunachal Pradesh has surged by an impressive 205%. “This growth showcases our state’s leaps and bounds in the tourism sector,” Khandu noted, urging stakeholders to capitalize on this momentum.
