Assam body opposes KSU’s ‘remove temple’ demand

Shillong, July 15: An Assam based pro-Hindu organisation, Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP), has criticised the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for its reported demand for demolition of a common worship hall inside CBI Office in Shillong, terming the demand as a threat to India’s secular fabric.

The KSU’s “anti-national” and “anti-constitutional” demand could trigger a communal unrest, KSP president Satya Ranjan Borah said on Wednesday.

Recalling the Mawjymbuin Cave issue in Mawsynram, when Meghalaya authorities had assured KSP of protecting the state’s secular ethos, Borah said the latest development has shaken trust in the state government’s commitment to uphold the Constitution.

“India is a secular country and every citizen has the basic right to worship as per his or her belief. We must not support activities that create social and communal tension,” Borah said.

It also urged Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to step in and ensure that people across the state are allowed equal freedom to practise religion without obstruction.
