Guwahati, May 23: Assam is targeting a ₹11 lakh crore Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) by 2030, Industries and Commerce Minister Bimal Borah announced at the Rising Northeast Investors’ Summit 2025 held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on Friday.
Speaking during the ministerial session on Infrastructure and Logistics, Borah highlighted Assam’s rapid economic ascent, noting that the state’s GSDP has more than doubled from ₹2.8 lakh crore in 2018 to ₹5.7 lakh crore in 2024.
“This growth underscores the resilience of our people and the focused development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership,” Borah said, citing a surge in infrastructure investment from ₹2 lakh crore to ₹11 lakh crore.

Borah positioned Assam as a rising economic hub with strategic geographic advantages: “Guwahati serves as the gateway to the Northeast and our proximity to ASEAN gives us a direct line to Southeast Asia’s booming markets.”
Assam’s export profile has grown substantially, rising from ₹2,474 crore in 2017-18 to ₹3,664 crore in 2023-24. Key export sectors include tea (55%), petroleum products (23%), and pharmaceuticals (5%).
The state’s One District One Product (ODOP) initiative has identified 29 unique products across 35 districts, promoting local entrepreneurship through items like muga silk, tea, and handloom crafts. Assam also boasts 31 Geographical Indication (GI)-certified products, including the Jaapi, Bell Metal Craft, and the Bihu Dhol, which play a vital role in sustaining artisan livelihoods.

Borah emphasized Assam’s ambitions to diversify its economic base, with aggressive promotion of sectors like electronics, semiconductors, and renewable energy. A flagship project in this effort is the Tata OSAT semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, which aims to position Assam as a major player in the global chip industry.
To facilitate cross-border trade, the state is enhancing infrastructure at key border points such as Sutarkandi, Golokganj, Mankachar (Bangladesh), and Darranga (Bhutan).
He also spotlighted the Jogighopa Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP)—India’s first international MMLP—spanning 317 acres along the Brahmaputra. The facility is designed to integrate road, rail, air, and waterways, reduce logistics costs by 10%, and create around 20 lakh jobs.

The summit, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, includes ministerial sessions, B2B and B2G meetings, startup showcases, and exhibitions by state governments and central ministries. Key investment sectors being promoted include tourism, agro-food processing, textiles, IT, healthcare, energy, logistics, education, and sports.
“The Northeast holds a pivotal role in building a developed Bharat,” Borah concluded, calling on investors to recognize Assam’s evolving economic potential and join the state in shaping its next growth chapter.
The summit is organized by DoNER, in collaboration with FICCI and Invest India.
