Assam govt to give land ‘pattas’ to 1.14 lakh tea workers’ families in 2nd phase of scheme

Guwahati, Jul 6: The Assam government on Monday announced that 1.14 lakh tea workers’ families across 250 gardens will be given land rights in their respective estates as part of the second phase of a scheme.

In a written reply to a query by Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar, Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare Minister Rameswar Teli said the government is gradually allotting land ‘pattas’ to tea garden workers.

“In the first phase, 28,831 ‘pattas’ were distributed in 106 tea gardens. In the second phase, 1.14 lakh families will be considered in 250 tea gardens,” he added.

Presently, a survey work is underway in this regard, the minister said.

On March 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the process of giving land rights to tea garden workers in the housing or labour lines within the estate premises, with 28,241 families receiving the rights in the first phase.

The PM had ceremonially handed over the ‘pattas’ to three families at the event organised just days before the assembly elections. (PTI)
