Assam’s minority students body demands ouster of minister Ashok Singhal over hate speech controversy

Guwahati, March 6: The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) has called for the immediate removal of Assam’s Health Minister Ashok Singhal from the state cabinet, branding him as unfit to hold a constitutional post.

In a memorandum submitted to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Thursday, AAMSU leaders accused Singhal of making highly inflammatory and communal remarks.

AAMSU president Rejaul Karim Sarkar and general secretary Minnatul Islam pointed to a viral video circulating widely on social media and electronic media, in which Singhal allegedly makes hate-filled comments targeting a specific community.

“His statements are deeply offensive and have hurt religious sentiments across the state. In the video, he can be seen urging his supporters to economically boycott a particular community. His comments have already triggered communal tensions, threatening Assam’s peace and social harmony,” the memorandum stated.

The student body accused Singhal of violating his constitutional oath, arguing that as an MLA and senior cabinet minister, he has a duty to uphold the principles of secularism and unity. “By making such divisive statements, he has endangered the safety and security of citizens and incited communal violence,” the memorandum added.

AAMSU further criticized Singhal for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Bhaona, a traditional Assamese theatrical performance considered a sacred cultural heritage created by Srimanta Shankardeva. “His comments not only violate constitutional values but also display an outright disregard for Assamese culture,” the memorandum asserted.
