‘Derogatory’ remarks against Modi’s mother
Shillong, Sep 1: BJP and Congress workers had heated exchange of slogans over the former’s surprise demonstration in front of Congress Bhavan here on Monday.
The saffron party’s demonstration was part of its nationwide protest against alleged derogatory remarks made against the late mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a Congress rally in Bihar.
The Congress rejected the BJP’s claims, alleging that the protest was a political tactic to divert attention from the issue of “vote theft”.
However, BJP Yuva Morcha president Mewaker Lyngdoh mentioned that a Congress worker Mohammed Rizvi was arrested later for making the “derogatory remark”.
Thanking people for joining the protest, the BJYM leader said the party also planned to stage protest in front of the office of Trinamool Congress (TMC) demanding action against TMC MP Mahua Moitra for her alleged derogatory remarks. The state BJP has already filed a Zero FIR in Shillong demanding action against Moitra.
Meanwhile, reacting to BJP’s demonstration, MPCC secretary Manuel Badwar highlighted the issue of “vote theft” in various elections, citing reports that suggested irregularities in over 70 seats.
He said the real issues facing the country are unemployment and the unequal distribution of wealth, which the BJP is trying to divert attention from.
Badwar accused the BJP of playing politics based on religion, caste, and family, and targeting the Gandhi family, which has borne the brunt of criticism for a long time.
Referring to a recent BJP meeting held in Shillong, Badwar claimed that the BJP’s protest was instigated by their leaders and was an attempt to please their party hierarchy rather than a genuine concern.

He reiterated that the Congress would continue to stand for the poorest of the poor and would not be swayed by the BJP’s tactics.
Badwar expressed hope that the public is aware of the BJP’s game and would reject their divisive politics.
Predicting a wave against BJP in the upcoming elections, he said, “I believe that 140 crore people are starting to realise now that the BJP has done nothing and the BJP has created wealth for a few people and the country is becoming poorer as far as income is concerned.”
“Meghalaya is one of those states which is actually taking the brunt of it all and for them to come and protest here is something which we definitely condemned and we would not like that to happen again,” he said.
