BJP-led NDA dominates Assam panchayat polls, opposition left in the dust

Guwahati, May 12: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has swept the Assam Panchayat elections, tightening its political grip at the grassroots level while exposing the deep disarray in the opposition ranks.

The initial trend reflects a landslide for the ruling coalition.

According to the official figure of the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC), out of 397 Zila Parishad Constituencies (ZPCs), the BJP bagged 36 seats while its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), secured 3 seats. Congress, struggling to maintain relevance in the state, managed just one seat in Bongaigaon. Notably, emerging regional players like the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) failed to secure a single ZPC seat, raising serious questions about their grassroots connect and organizational strength.

BJP secured 4 ZPC seats in Bongaigaon, 1 in Golaghat, 15 in Jorhat, 1 in Kamrup, 4 in Lakhimpur, 10 seats in Sonitpur and 1 ZPC seat in Tinsukia district.

AGP won 4 ZPC in Bongaigaon, 1 in Jorhat and 2 seats in Sonitpur district.

Congress salvaged a single ZPC win in Bongaigaon, while three independent candidates emerged victorious across various districts.

In the Anchalik Panchayat Constituencies (APCs), out of a total 2,192 seats, the BJP once again led with a commanding 242 seats, and the AGP added another 30 to the NDA tally. Congress, though performing better at this tier, managed only 34 seats. Raijor Dal and AIUDF scraped by with one seat each. Independents took 14 seats, reflecting minor pockets of local resistance to party dominance.

A senior ASEC official mentioned that final confirmations of all results would be completed by Tuesday evening.

This result not only cements the BJP’s dominance in rural Assam but also serves as a wake-up call to the opposition, especially with the 2026 Assembly elections approaching. The poor performance by Congress and regional parties has once again exposed their inability to present a united or effective front against the BJP-led juggernaut.
