BJP takes the plunge into Gambegre, fields Tura MDC

Tura, Oct 22: The BJP has made a late entry into the election fray for Gambegre bypoll with the national party fielding sitting Tura MDC Bernard N Marak, an official announcement having been made on Tuesday.

With the entry of Bernard Marak, the total number of candidates has risen to seven. As many as four Independents and candidates from three parties are currently in the contest in Gambegre constituency, which was necessitated following Saleng A Sangma’s election to the Lok Sabha from Tura Parliamentary seat.

The ruling NPP has fielded chief minister Conrad K Sangma’s wife Mehtab Chandi A Sangma, the opposition All India Trinamool Congress or TMC is fielding former  MLA Zenith Sangma’s wife and sitting GHADC MDC Sadhiarani M Sangma, while the Congress has selected Jingjang Marak.

In the last assembly elections of 2023 the BJP fielded Daniel M Sangma from Gambegre and secured 315 votes (1.11% of the total votes).

Saleng A Sangma of the Congress won that election securing 11178 votes and a vote share of 39.57%.

His nearest rival was Sadhiarani M Sangma of the AITC who secured 8345 votes and 29.48% of the vote share.

The NPP candidate and sitting Babelapara MDC Rakesh A Sangma came a poor third with just 7594 votes and 26.83 % of the vote percentage.
