BJP working on to break 2-seat ‘barrier’ in 2028: Hek

Shillong, Aug 18: The ruling ally BJP has realised the complexity of its two-seat “barrier” in the state assembly and working on to overcome it in the next elections in 2028, Six-time MLA and senior BJP leader Alexander Laloo Hek said on Monday.

“We have also done lots of survey work. It is a complex situation and it will take a lot of time to explain. But now we have realised this complexity and we are going to sort it out one by one…,” the Pynthorumkhrah told reporters while replying to a query.

The BJP has never been able to win more than two seats in the 60-member assembly.

On possible inductions, Hek indicated that several prominent leaders are keen to join the BJP but said it was premature to reveal names.

“Many big names are very interested to join the party…The election is one-and-a-half-year away… six months before the time, you will see everything will be in order,” he said.

He confirmed that both sitting and former MLAs are among those in touch with the party.

Calling for greater youth participation in politics, he said, “We need the new generation to be in politics. As for my case, I have been serving for more than 30 years in politics, so we should give space also for our youth to join politics.”

To another query, he said he does not feel threatened by the growing influence of new political parties in his constituency.

“All political parties have every right to rise in any constituency. There is nothing wrong to rise only in my constituency. There are 60 constituencies,” Hek said.

Asked specifically about the rise of the Voice of the People Party in Pynthorumkhrah, Hek said he has faced multiple challengers over the last three decades and does not see the new entrants as a threat.

“I don’t feel any threat by this,” the BJP leader stated.
