New Delhi, Aug 6: RSS affiliate Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) on Thursday said it has launched a relief and rehabilitation campaign in flood-hit Assam’s Sivasagar and Charaideo districts to help around 5,000 affected families.
Fourteen districts and 1.6 lakh people were affected by floods in Assam while the death toll has risen to 95 with six more deaths, officials said on Thursday.
Six fatalities were reported on Wednesday, two each from Sivasagar and Biswanath districts, and one each from Golaghat and Morigaon.
The worst-hit Sivasagar alone has accounted for 50 deaths so far, while 21 people have lost their lives in another badly ravaged neighbouring district of Charaideo.
BKS Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh Raghvendra Singh Patel said workers from Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Nalbari and Kamrup districts have arranged paddy seedlings for transplantation in around 500 bighas of land and are also sending fodder for affected livestock to help the affected families become self reliant.
“In this difficult time, Bharatiya Kisan Sangh has started a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation campaign with the aim of helping around 5,000 affected families become self-reliant again,” Patel said.
The organisation said it will provide school uniforms to more than 5,000 students to ensure that the education of children affected by the floods is not disrupted.
It also said its Jorhat unit is organising traditional herbal treatment, health check-up camps and training in household medicinal remedies, while a team of 50 volunteers from Morigaon has been carrying out reconstruction of damaged houses and sanitation drives in Sivasagar over the past four days.
The BKS said three farmer producer companies (FPCs) associated with it have contributed Rs 3 lakh to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
“Once the floodwaters recede, our units in Barpeta and Bongaigaon will help affected families take up livelihood activities such as mushroom cultivation and animal husbandry so that they can rebuild their lives,” Patel said.(PTI)
