Boost to Sports Infrastructure: Synthetic football turf opens at Kharbuli

Over the past seven years, more than 70% of our current sports infrastructure has been developed: Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister

Shillong, Oct 16: In another addition to fast-growing sports infrastructure in Meghalaya, a newly constructed synthetic football turf was inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at Kharbuli, Nongkrem in East Khasi Hills on Thursday.

Completed in four years, the turf will provide significant boost to nurturing football talent in the region.

Building of the artificial turf reflects the government’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people, the chief minister said.

Pointing out that Meghalaya has a predominantly young population, he emphasised the importance of investing in education, sports, and infrastructure to help them grow and succeed.

“Sports teach discipline, hard work, and teamwork. Over the past seven years, more than 70% of our current sports infrastructure has been developed,” he said.

He added that the government is promoting sports at the grassroots level by organising block-level leagues and tournaments that engage youth and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

He urged students and local youth to use the new facility responsibly and make the most of it to develop their skills.

In his address, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla praised the Chief Minister’s vision and active involvement in development initiatives.

Shylla highlighted various government programmes that support athletes, young entrepreneurs, musicians, and youth through training, financial aid, and employment opportunities.

He also spoke about Meghalaya’s preparations to host the National Games in 2027, which will give young athletes greater exposure to world-class sporting facilities.

Former MLA Lambor Malngiang thanked the Chief Minister for sanctioning the project during the COVID-19 pandemic and appreciated the visible transformation of the playground since the foundation was laid in December 2021.

He expressed gratitude for the government’s continued support for infrastructure and youth development in the constituency.

Hima Khyrim chief Dr Balajied Sing Syiem, State Sports Council Meghalaya chief engineer Manhiam Marbaniang, and Kharbuli headman C Kharbuli were among others present on the occasion.
