Karbi farmers assist Pnar neighbours in harvesting paddy

Shillong, Oct 21: In a heartening act of bonhomie across inter-state border region troubled by disputes, Karbi farmers from Assam have come out to assist their Pnar neighbours from Lapangap in West Jaintia Hills district in harvesting paddy in their fields.

Apparent in a video shared by the district administration, the act highlighted the spirit of cooperation between the two indigenous communities and return of normalcy at Lapalang where situation had been tense for the past few weeks.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had intervened in the matter by taking up the issue with chief executive member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in Assam and local traditional leaders of the region.

Meanwhile, police presence will be maintained in the area to provide security and prevent any outsiders from disrupting the peace, said West Jaintia Hills superintendent of police Jagpal Singh Dhanao said.

The police authorities have also appreciated the patience and restraint shown by Lapangap villagers, saying they are working on to ensure a safe and secure harvest.
