Real-time weather alert channel launched by IMD Shillong

Shillong, March 19: The India Meteorological Department’s Meteorological Centre in Shillong has introduced an official WhatsApp Channel to deliver real-time forecasts and early warnings to the public across Meghalaya.

The platform is designed to provide timely, accurate, and easily accessible weather information—particularly critical as the state heads into the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons, often marked by heavy rainfall and extreme weather events.

Officials said the platform will function as a quick and reliable source of updates not only for citizens but also for government agencies and other stakeholders. Subscribers will receive three-hourly nowcasts in both English and Khasi, along with daily weather observations, weekly forecasts, and alerts on adverse weather conditions. The channel will also share agrometeorological bulletins and other relevant updates from IMD Shillong.

The initiative is expected to enhance preparedness and response by ensuring that vital weather information reaches users instantly on their mobile devices.

Residents across Meghalaya have been encouraged to join the WhatsApp Channel using the official link and QR code provided by IMD to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings.
