BSF jawan drowns in Bandari falls, body retrieved

Tura, Sept 22: A BSF jawan has drowned in Bandari waterfalls near Durabanda village in South Garo Hills, on Sunday morning.

The victim, identified as Sub Inspector JE (electrical) Suman Kumar Sona had gone with a BSF colleague from the SHQ Dobasipara headquarters in Tura to the Bandari waterfalls for a picnic on Sunday morning.

Durananda village and Bandari falls is barely 25 kms from Dobasipara camp, but falls under South Garo Hills district’s Sangknigre police station jurisdiction.

Sona had taken a plunge into the cold waters of the falls but failed to surface. Noticing his disappearance his colleague Sumit Singh frantically searched for him, but to no avail. His mobile was also unreachable.  The incident happened around 9 AM.

Following an alert, BSF teams rushed to the site along with Tura police and rescue teams. Villagers came forward to lend a helping hand in the search.

The body of the victim was retrieved from deep waters of the falls late afternoon.

This is the second drowning incident at Bandari falls in the last one year. Earlier, a college student lost his life to a similar case of drowning.
